Three suspects nabbed with stolen fertiliser worth Sh1.8 million

Detectives from the DCI's Operations Support Unit (OSU) have arrested three people for stealing hundreds of bags of government-subsidised fertiliser.

Ali Abdi Fatah, Abdi Jabar Hussein and Bonface Ouma Awili were arrested at the Baraka cereal store in Matisi market, along the Kitale-Endebess Road, on Monday night.

Their arrest followed an operation initiated to curb the rising theft of fertiliser from government stores.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, rogue individuals have been stealing fertiliser from depots of the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) and sneaking it out of the country.

"The DCI Operations Support Unit (OSU) deployed to curb the vice has successfully intercepted and recovered 739 bags of assorted brands of fertiliser," the DCI said on Tuesday.

The 739 bags of fertiliser valued at Sh1,847,500 included 424 of Falcon CAN, 43 of Tupande, 98 of Mavuno, 71 of KEL Green NPK (50 kg each), 20 of NPSB-OCP, four of DAP-OCP, and 26 of FOMI OTESHA.

There were also 34 bags of Simba Urea, 16 of Falcon Ammonia Sulphate and one 50kg bag of NAFAKA Plus.

Also recovered were delivery notes from the NCPB's Kitale, Malaba, Moi's Bridge, Isiolo and Maua depots, whose authentication is underway.

The DCI said the items were seized while being prepared for transit to a neighbouring country. They have been kept as exhibits for the case as the three suspects await arraignment.
